In very simple words, a farmer from northern Thailand shows how senseless the rat race and over consumption are. After giving a try to life in the city, advanced studies and purchased clothes, he listened to his inner voice telling him: “That’s stupid!” He went back to work the land and provide for himself and others. Just brilliant!

Where to get information about how to get rid of synthetic products in your home

Ok, that's a very long and boring title for very exciting news. A friend of mine has started a blog about freeing your home from synthetic products that are not good for you. 

I've already written about some related issues, like adobe houses and how to make them starting from some playful brick-making. And I've been meaning to write about some other related topics, like cleaning products, but never got around to do it. So, all this research she has been doing on those products comes in very handy. But I better let her tell you a bit more about it:

"I am launching my blog 'My Chemical-Free House' which helps guide you through the building, renovation or re-decorating of a VOC-free, chemical-free house.
I wanted to put this together as a guide, especially for those who are chemically sensitive or have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. However, it will be useful for anyone wishing to create a healthier environment.

I have done months of research to compile this information for the creation of my own chemical-free house that is going up soon in BC [British Columbia, Canada], and I hope that it can help others with environmental sensitivities to improve their symptoms. It has definitely helped me a lot so far to reduce indoor toxins.

It hasn't been easy to sift through all the information to find out what is really chemical-free and what is simply 'green-washing', that's why I wanted to compile the information and present it in a way that is user-friendly. With each aspect I have also sourced the most affordable options."

En la última entrada sobre pájaros y nidos, los pobres bichos salían malparados. Para que no parezca que son todos tan cabeza hueca, acá va una muestra de lo que algunos de ellos sí saben hacer muy bien: la casa de barro por antonomasia. Para quienes relacionan una casa de barro con algo pobre, acá a la izquierda les ponemos un ejemplo que encontramos en Maldonado. Nada de andarse con chiquitas: para este hornero, buenas vistas e iluminación de primera con faroles antiguos era un must.

Home-building doesn't come easy to animals either

As I've mentioned before, the area we're staying is a bit of a paradise for birds. They're everywhere. They're happy. They're noisy. (We don't mind it at all, but sometimes they get so loud that the other day, while on a Skype meeting, my client asked: Are those birds in the room?)

Yet, it's not easy being a bird, not even in this sanctuary. In the past months we've seen three nests being built, and the rate of success is not as great as the bird population around would have you think.

I love how sometimes life has a way to tell you you're on the right track. I re-connected with a former colleague I hadn't seen nor talked to in years and guess what she said: "Pueden venir y ya de paso conocen mi casita en construcción. Te cuento que estamos al mango construyendo una casa de barro con nuestras propias manos". Yeap. They happened to be building their own adobe house. How perfect is that?

Casas de adobe. Ladrillos de barro. Bio-construcción. Vivienda ecológica. Hay quien sabe a lo que me refiero. Y hay muchos otros que, a la mención de barro, largan una carcajada mientras sacuden la cabeza y mascullan algo sobre hippies o tribus prehistóricas. En Uruguay, donde la construcción de barro y paja es lo que tradicionalmente se usó en el campo para hacer los ranchos, surgen miradas preocupadas y comentarios sobre vinchucas y taperas.

Un proceso eminentemente colaborativo

La construcción en barro es milenaria, pero hay un movimiento de vuelta a esta técnica entre arquitectos, incluso en Uruguay. Entre estos arquitectos está una amiga mía que es gran defensora de ese tipo de casas y que me viene comiendo el coco hace más de una década con los beneficios del barro: mejor aislamiento del frío, del calor y del ruido, más económico, más maleable y con mayor posibilidades creativas, duradero, seguro, agradable. Lógico entonces, que cuando ofrecieron un taller de ladrillos de barro en mi universidad en Vancouver, aproveché.
