Touristing around Portland, Maine: happy feet

Luckily, Portland is a lovely place! Lots of history, lots of character, and very hospitable people... a great place to be tourists - something we haven't done much so far.

So, what have we done in the last couple of days? Well ... we walked and walked and walked... to the point  that we have worn out the heels of our shoes!

Walking with our backpacks from the docks to the Inn at St. Johns attracted some looks, as we're carrying all our possessions along: our home in our backpack and our office in a front-pack. A fellow walking his dog, fresh cup of coffee on one hand and a bag of coffee beans on the other, looked at me, smiled, extended his coffee, stared amused at us and asked me: "Could you hold this for me?" He was making light of how much we were carrying. I would have too!

"It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to"
-- J.R.R. Tolkien

Indeed ... here are some pics from around Portland:

  1. Miss you guys already!
We are finding Portland to be a very accessible place! We walked over the Bridge to find a great Goodwill store (woohoo!) and a farmers' market (what?!). I am currently at the library while Jim hoofs it to the NAPA for another alternator.
We possibly sail for Pourtsmouth tomorrow, if the forecast holds. And it looks like Maria will not bother anyone here, *whew*!
I wish you happy trails and interesting times.
